Seattle bus crashes into car and building killing 1, injuring 12

A Seattle bus collided with a car and mounted the sidewalk, striking a pedestrian and slamming into a brick building Saturday afternoon in a chain reaction that left one dead and a dozen injured.

The crash in Belltown at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Battery Street killed the female pedestrian and left the driver of a red sedan in critical condition, Seattle police said.

The sedan was heading southbound on 5th Avenue when it collided with the public bus traveling eastbound on Battery Street just before 3:30 p.m., according to cops.

Police said the crash made the bus lose control and swerve off the road into the building, police said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the sedan was removed from the wreck via the jaws of life and rushed to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

He is also being evaluated for any signs of impairment by a drug recognition expert, Seattle police said.

The bus driver and 10 passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

One person was found dead outside of the building following the crash, police said.

Seattle firefighters evaluated the building that the bus drove into and concluded that there was no significant structural damage or threat.

The Seattle police’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad are investigating the crash.
