Sen. Tim Scott says ‘major announcement’ set for May 22
GOP Sen. Tim Scott hinted he’ll make a “major announcement” next month as he inches closer to potentially going forward with an official run for the White House in 2024.
Scott, representing South Carolina since 2013, said he would reveal his decision about running for president during a May 22 event.
Scott is one of several GOP contenders that are eying the Oval Office in hopes of preventing a second term for Democratic President Joe Biden.
“It is time to make the final step,” Scott said in front of supporters at a town hall in downtown Charleston Sunday, adding. “We will have a major announcement.”
Scott, 57, would be one of a handful of declared candidates if he formally enters the race.
Former President Donald Trump, ex-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have all officially begun bids for the GOP nomination.
Former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are among others heavily considering running for the highest office.
Scott’s tease on Sunday comes after he launched an exploratory committee for president in April.
When unveiling that step that allows him to raise money for polling and travel tied to deciding on a potential run, he said he was the antidote to the “radical left” as he slammed Democrats for dividing the country by fostering a “culture of grievance.”
“When I fought back against their liberal agenda, they called me a prop. A token. Because I disrupt their narrative,” he said in the video. “I threaten their control.”
Scott, who has a self-made success story to boast, was polling at about 2% among presidential contenders on the Republican side. He is the only black Republican in the US Senate.
Biden, 80, confirmed last week he would run for a second term.
