Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United: Erik ten Hag’s side crash out of Europa League after defensive nightmare
Sevilla beat Manchester United 3-0 on the night to win 5-2 on aggregate and reach the Europa League semi-finals, heavily aided by a dreadful defensive display from the visitors.
A Harry Maguire clanger gifted Sevilla their opening goal inside 10 minutes. Maguire called for the ball from goalkeeper David de Gea, received it with three Sevilla forwards around him and promptly lost possession – giving Youssef En-Nesyri a straightforward opportunity he did not waste.
United would have been 2-0 down at the break were it not for a VAR review ruling out a Lucas Ocampos goal because of an offside in a move started by Casemiro losing possession meekly.

‘He could be a huge player for this club’ – Scholes lauds Antony’s progress

Fit-again Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw were introduced at the break, but the visitors went two goals behind almost immediately when, from a corner, Loic Bade’s shoulder sent the ball looping over De Gea and in off the bar.
United had no response as Sevilla managed the game well and conceded few chances of note, something Erik ten Hag’s team had failed to do when 2-0 up in the first leg.
The misery was completed in the 81st minute when a De Gea howler presented En-Nesyri with the ball and he scored into an empty net.
Sevilla, who are chasing a record seventh Europa League title, will face Juventus in the last four.
TALKING POINT – United masters of their own downfall
To say United lost this tie more than Sevilla won it may seem Anglo-centric, but it is true. The five goals United conceded across both legs were all soft. Having surrendered control of the tie at Old Trafford, they then never really turned up at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium. To ask so few questions of a team languishing in the bottom half of La Liga, and who were playing with a makeshift centre-back for the majority of the second leg, is a thoroughly dispiriting way to exit this competition.
For all the progress United appear to have made this season, with winning the League Cup the biggest peak, this is the latest addition to an alarming list of painful troughs.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH – Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla)
The Moroccan took his two big chances clinically and was also a menace from set pieces. Across the two legs, Sevilla were a much better side with En-Nesyri on the pitch.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
MAGUIRE CALAMITY GIFTS SEVILLA GOAL8′ – As United look to play out from the back, three players converge on Maguire who passes straight into them. The ball drops to En-Nesyri and he calmly slots past De Gea, who got Maguire into the mess in the first place. Another gift for Sevilla in this tie.
VAR SAVES UNITED 40′ – United give the ball away cheaply and Ocampos ends up scoring from Acuna’s cutback – but it looks like there was an offside in the build-up. VAR investigates and indeed Acuna was offside, so no goal.
SEVILLA SCORE FROM CORNER 47′ – Sevilla double their lead from a corner as Bade tries to head the ball, shoulders it instead, and the ball loops over De Gea before going in off the bar.
SEVILLA SQUANDER GOALMOUTH SCRAMBLE 52′ – En-Neysri wins a header from a corner and it sets up a mad scramble Sevilla somehow don’t score from. Shaw and Dalot each come to the rescue before the ball is cleared.
DE GEA HOWLER LEADS TO THIRD GOAL 81′ – De Gea comes off his line to deal with a long ball, gets it horribly wrong and gifts a chance for En-Neysri, who scores into an empty net from range.
KEY STAT
In nine career games against Sevilla, De Gea has never been on the winning side and kept only one clean sheet.
