Shanghai Masters snooker: Ali Carter sets up Ronnie O’Sullivan clash, Ding Junhui overcomes Si Jiahui, Jack Lisowski win

Ali Carter and Ronnie O’Sullivan will renew acquaintances in the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday after 2010 winner Carter completed a 6-2 win over local wildcard Dong Zi in the first round of the elite invitational event.

The German Masters champion produced breaks of 76, 88 and 122 to establish a 4-0 lead at the mid-session interval on Monday before finalising his progress with a closing 86.

They last met in the last 32 of the World Grand Prix three years ago with O’Sullivan emerging a 4-1 winner.

The pair infamously bumped into each at the table during a bad-natured contest at the 2018 World Championship.

Carter’s 13-9 last-16 victory at the Crucible is his solitary success against O’Sullivan in 17 career meetings since 2001.

O’Sullivan lifts Shanghai title for third successive year

Ding Junhui won his all-Chinese duel with World Championship semi-finalist Si Jiahui 6-2 to secure a last-16 match with Neil Robertson on Wednesday.

Two-time champion Ding led 3-0 boosted by a 70 and 51, and never looked back as he added a 58 in the seventh frame with Si coming up short despite a 60 and 71 of his own.

Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson lost 6-2 to former European Masters champion Fan Zhengyi.

before being informed it was a best-of-11 frame match. Which he lost two frames later.

Jack Lisowski recovered from trailing 4-1 to Zhou Yuelong to complete a 6-5 win that sets up a meeting with friend Judd Trump in the last 16 on Tuesday morning.

Lisowski produced 79, 67 and 51 after Zhou earlier made 61 and 51 to lead 5-4. Zhou forced the decider, but a closing break of 84 sealed Lisowski’s progress.
