South Carolina beach shooting injures six during senior skip day
At least six people were shot when a gunman opened fire on a South Carolina beach that was crowded with high schoolers partaking in their so-called senior skip day, authorities said.
The shooting erupted just before 5:30 p.m. on the Isle of Palms, a city roughly 15 miles northwest of Charleston.
Police said the gun violence stemmed from altercations from a “large crowd” made mostly of high schoolers.
At least six people were struck by the gunfire, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Almost all of the victims are teenagers around the age of 18 who were enjoying senior skip day.
“There were a couple of altercations that took place and during one of those altercations, there were several shots that were fired at this point,” police Chief Kevin Cornett said at a press conference.
Video of the incident shows the massive crowd huddled beneath a pier behind Sea Cabins, a condominium near a popular strip filled with bars and restaurants, when at least 10 shots were fired.
A second angle shows the sunbathers screaming and frantically sprinting across the beach for safety as police sirens wail in the background.
One victim, a woman in her 30s, was a beachgoer who happened to fall in the line of fire, Cornett said.
Police have detained “several individuals” on weapons charges, but have not yet revealed whether they have the shooter in custody.
The cops also stopped short of identifying a high schooler as the shooter.
Cornett also said the IOPPD recovered several weapons, but cannot say whether they were the firearms involved.
