Southampton confirm appointment of Russell Martin as new manager – ‘My aim is to get this club back where it belongs’

Southampton have confirmed the appointment of Russell Martin as their new manager.

Martin, 37, arrives to take charge of the relegated Saints from Championship club Swansea City, who he had managed since 2021.

The former Norwich City defender and captain only took his first managerial job in 2019 with MK Dons, but has gained plaudits over the past four years due to his sides’ progressive style of play.

Southampton chairman Henrik Kraft, said: “We are extremely excited to welcome Russell to Southampton.

“Russell was the stand-out candidate throughout our recruitment process and we are confident his strong track record, alongside the experienced leadership of our new director of football, Jason Wilcox, will deliver great results.”

After putting his name to his deal, Martin said: “It’s a privilege to accept this opportunity at Southampton, a club with such a long and rich history.

“My aim is to get this club back where it belongs – in the top flight of English football.

“I am ready for this challenge and will give everything to achieve this aim and to give the supporters a team that makes them proud.

“I’m thrilled to be here and cannot wait for the work to begin.”

Martin accrued 29 caps for Scotland during a long playing career that saw him represent the likes of Wycombe, Norwich and Rangers at club level.

He made 509 total appearances, but long seemed destined for a career in management after beginning his coaching badges aged just 22.

Taking over at Swansea in 2021, he led the South Wales side to 15th in the 2021/22 season, and then 10th in the campaign just gone.
