Spurs players reimburse away fans for Newcastle United humbling – ‘A defeat like this hurts’

Tottenham Hotspur’s players have released a statement confirming that they will reimburse the match tickets of the club’s away fans who travelled to their 6-1 hammering against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Spurs were played off the park by Eddie Howe’s side and found themselves three goals down inside nine minutes.

That became 5-0 after 21 minutes as the embarrasment continued on Tyneside.

In the aftermath of the game Spurs sacked caretaker manager Cristian Stellini and replaced him with former midfielder Ryan Mason, who will take charge for the rest of the season.

“As a squad, we understand your frustration, your anger,” the statement, released by Spurs on social media, read.

“It wasn’t good enough. We know words aren’t enough in situations like this but believe us, a defeat like this hurts.

“We appreciate your support, home and away, and with this in mind we would like to reimburse fans with the cost of their match tickets from St James’ Park.

“We know this does not change what happened on Sunday and we will give everything to put things right against Manchester United on Thursday evening when, again, your support will mean everything to us.

“Together – and only together – can we move things forward.”

Following the defeat, Spurs are fifth in the Premier League on 53 points, six points behind Manchester United in fourth and Newcastle in third.

However they have played two games more than Man Utd and one game more than Newcastle.

Meanwhile Aston Villa in sixth are just two points behind them, whilst Liverpool are three points behind in seventh and Brighton four points behind one place further back.

Spurs have played the same amount of games as Villa have but they have played one more than Liverpool and – thanks to a quirk of the fixture calendar – three more than Brighton.
