Stan Moody pays Shaun Murphy tribute after first World Championship snooker victory – ‘It is like father and son’

Teenage potting prodigy Stan Moody has praised his mentor Shaun Murphy’s influence after winning his first World Championship match in Sheffield.

16-year-old Moody illuminated his 10-7 win over Andres Petrov in the opening round of qualifying at the English Institute of Sport with breaks of 110, 90, 86, 72, 59 and 54 as he led the Estonia player from start to finish.

26-year-old Petrov contributed 101, 78, 65 and 52 in a high-quality joust, but was never better than two frames behind throughout the contest after falling 4-1 behind early on.

Moody will progress to a meeting with China’s world No. 68 Zhang Anda on Wednesday and Thursday chasing three more wins to reach the promised land of the Crucible Theatre in his debut year at the sport’s biggest event.

The Halifax kid has thanked 2005 Crucible king Murphy – snooker’s undisputed form horse after wins at the Players Championship and Tour Championship – for helping his development that culminated in victory at the WSF junior world final in February that earned him a two-year playing card on the main circuit.

‘Incredible!’ – Ridiculous pot from Murphy as he uses jaws and cushion to pot red

“I’m very proud of myself,” said Moody, who also competed at the Six Red World Championship in Thailand last month. “There was such relief at potting the winning balls. I couldn’t stop shaking, I couldn’t breathe. I just tried to hold myself together and it worked.

“It means everything. All of the practice has paid off. I came here not expecting anything and just thought I’d enjoy it. When you get to nine that all goes out of the window and you are desperate to get over the line.

“We first met Shaun a few years ago in Hull and he said he wanted to help me. It has gone on from there. It has been great.

“In certain parts of the match, he has told me what to do. It pays off in matches like this. It is like father and son.”
