Stefanos Tsitsipas puts 2023 Australian Open title quest ahead of Margot Robbie meeting, for now

Australian Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas insists he’s more focused on his tennis than trying to organise a meeting with Margot Robbie, for now.

After his quarter-final win over Jiri Lehecka, the world No. 4 made an offer to the Australian actress to take a seat in his player’s box during the Melbourne tournament.
But she was nowhere to be seen as the Greek beat Karen Khachanov in four sets in Friday’s semi-final.

Speaking to Eurosport expert Laura Robson after the match, Tsitsipas claimed he wasn’t too disappointed.

“The plan for me is to do my job. The rest can come afterwards,” said the Greek.

“I admire her a lot, she’s a great actress, I like her work. But right now I’m focused on my own world. I’d prefer not to try playing in front of her!”

The unexpected sub-plot to Tsitsipas’ Australian Open run came after he told Jim Courier in an on-court interview: “Australia is such a great country. I like a lot of Aussie things; one of my favourite actresses comes from Australia, Margot Robbie.”

Asked if he was making an offer, Tsitsipas replied: “It would be nice to see her over there one day,” looking towards his box.

Courier then asked for confirmation that this was an official invitation. “Absolutely,” Tsitsipas replied.

The two-time Academy Award nominee may not have made it, but Tsitsipas still put in an impressive performance to beat Khachanov in four sets.

He will face Novak Djokovic or Tommy Paul in Sunday’s final as the 24-year-old bids to win the first Grand Slam of his career.

Tsitsipas said: “[I stayed calm with my] experience! Lots of repetitive experiences. Enjoying the game helped a lot.

“When you’re overwhelmed by so many things, [you have to] keep it simple and not overcomplicate things.

“It was defensive tennis when he came out at the end of the third set. It wasn’t very aggressive, I could’ve done more with the ball and increased the pressure on him. It doesn’t matter, I won, I found a way.”
