Switzerland leave it late to remain unbeaten in World Curling Championships with win over Canada

Switzerland remain unbeaten at the 2023 World Women’s Curling Championship as they claimed their sixth win in four days.

Silvana Tirinzoni’s team were made to work for their latest win, tied at 6-6 heading into the final end, before holding their nerve to deliver a 7-6 win over joint-second placed Canada to continue as the only unbeaten team in the competition.

The victory ended a three-match win streak for Canada, who came closest to defeating the Swiss side at this World Championships.

It was a heart-breaking last gasp defeat for Canada, but skip Kerri Einarson insists it is something her team will need to move on from quickly.

She said: “The sheet was definitely a little trickier than any sheet we’d played.

“There were some tendencies that were coming out in it – but we just have to shake this one off and come out strong again tonight.

“The weight was pretty close. It ended up being a back-four weight; we just needed less ice. I thought we could carve it in there. It was a difficult last shot because Switzerland buried about a rock and a half in there.”

But they responded excellently in the evening session to thump New Zealand 10-4 and remain in second place, joint with Italy, who defeated both Denmark and Scotland to secure their fourth and fifth wins.

That leaves South Korea and Norway in joint fourth, after South Korea edged past Germany 4-2, while Norway defeated Scotland 9-6 in nine ends.

The USA remained in the hunt of those sides ahead with a thumping 7-1 victory over winless New Zealand and a 7-2 win over Denmark to sit on four wins in sixth place while Sweden defeated Japan 5-4 with a 10th end winner.
