Tao Geoghegan Hart suffers fractured hip in horror Giro d’Italia crash, Ineos Grenadiers announce

Tao Geoghegan Hart will require surgery after sustaining a fractured hip following a crash on Stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia, his team Ineos Grenadiers have confirmed.

And Ineos revealed the Briton’s prognosis later on Wednesday.

“Immediately following his involvement in a crash during today’s Stage 11 of the Giro d’Italia, Tao Geoghegan Hart was transported to a local hospital in Genoa,” the statement read.

“After further assessment, imaging confirmed that Tao had sustained a fracture of the left hip which will require surgery.

“Tao, the thoughts and best wishes of all your fellow Grenadiers are with you tonight. We wish you a speedy recovery and know you have what it takes to come back even stronger!”

“I’m devastated this is how my giro ended. Thank you all for your messages and support.

“I was so excited about the remainder of this race and loving every minute of it.

“Arrivederci Giro d’Italia.”

Geoghegan Hart was well-placed in the general classification ahead of Stage 11 – he was sat in third, just five seconds off team-mate Thomas.

That leaves Thomas and Roglic as the two outstanding candidates to triumph at the first Grand Tour of 2023.

They are separated by just two seconds, with Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) at 22 seconds and Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM) at 35 seconds back.
