Team GB win European Track Cycling Championships women’s team pursuit gold, Jeffrey Hoogland tops time trial

Katie Archibald, Neah Evans, Josie Knight and Anna Morris beat Italy in the women’s team pursuit at the 2023 European Track Cycling Championships to win gold medal for Team GB.

The foursome produced a sttong display to win by a little over two seconds overall in Switzerland, crossing the line in 4:13.890 to secure the top prize.

Germany scraped past France in the bronze race to land a place on the podium.

In an identical race between Team GB and Italy in the men’s team pursuit final, the Italian quadruple edged Daniel Bigham, Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Vernon and Oliver Wood by 1.1 seconds.

The British outfit were made to settle for silver, with France able to see off Denmark to win bronze.

Jeffrey Hoogland claimed his fourth 1km time trial European Championships gold medal, with a time of 58.203 seconds enough to see off second place Alejandro Martinez and eventual bronze medalist Maximilian Dornbach.

Team GB’s Joseph Truman was unfortunate to miss out on a podium finish after coming fourth, two seconds behind German rider Dornbach.

Elinor Barker narrowly missed out on a top-three finish in the women’s elimination race with Lotte Kopecky finishing first, Valentine Fortin in second and Maike van der Duin grabbing the last spot on the podium ahead of the Brit.

William Perrett’s 31 points earned him seventh place in the points race, and elsewhere for Team GB, Sophie Capewell got the better of compatriot Emma Finucane in the women’s sprint quarter-finals.
