Teen girl allegedly murdered dad, brother then called 911 on herself
A teenage girl allegedly shot dead her dad and young brother, then called 911 on herself — telling the Nevada dispatcher, “I just couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody,” according to court filings.
Mashenka Reid, 17, was arrested Friday afternoon after police found her dad and brother — described as a 4- or 5-year-old boy — dead from gunshot wounds in the family’s Reno apartment, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.
Reid’s younger sister was also home — but survived by hiding inside a locked bedroom, which a police officer had to kick in to take her to safety.
The first 911 call about the carnage came a neighbor reporting gunshots and screams for help.
Then Reid herself dialed 911 and allegedly confessed to killing her family members, according to an affidavit filed in Reno Justice Court obtained by the paper
“I shot my dad. I shot my brother. My brother is dead,” she told the emergency operator, the document said.
“I just couldn’t resist the urge to kill somebody,” she allegedly said.
Reid also said she dropped the suspected murder weapon, a Walther PPS, inside the apartment.
The first officer on the scene detained the teenager and placed her on the floor, before going to check on the welfare of other family members.
Reid’s brother was found lying on the coach with a gunshot wound to the head, the affidavit stated.
The teen’s father was discovered in the garage with gunshot wounds to his chest and back. Paramedics pronounced both victims dead on the spot. As of Tuesday, they have not been publicly identified.
There was no word from the authorities on a possible motive for the double homicide
Reid has been charged as an adult with two counts of open murder and an additional count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. She is due in court for a bail hearing Thursday.
