Teen mother takes her toddler to her prom as her date
A 16-year-old has taken the title of bringing the world’s cutest prom date: her 18-month-old son.
Melissa McCabe, from Merseyside in the UK, gave birth to her son Arthur at 15 and has raised him by herself since.
After she couldn’t find a babysitter on her big night, McCabe decided to take the most important guy in her life as her date — Arthur. She posted a TikTok of them before the event in their eveningwear, stealing the hearts of TikTok where it was viewed over 1.6 million times.
“Everyone was going to prom with their boyfriends but I took my biggest blessing,” McCabe writes on the video, along with a series of adorable photos of her in a blue ball gown and little Arthur in a tiny grey suit.
The clip was flooded with comments from TikTok users, praising the teen for her parenting skills.
“Omg you are the best mother the most gorgeous person I have ever had the pleasure to see,” one user wrote.
“This is the cutest…he looks so proud in his little suit,” gushed another.
She’s not alone in bringing her kiddo to prom either. Last week, a 16-year-old, who had a baby at 14, brought her son as a prom date, too, and said her school was pleasantly “shocked.”
McCabe told the Liverpool Echo she found it difficult when she first found out she was pregnant, as she was still at school and chose to raise him without his father.
“Everyone told me I was ruining my life and I wasn’t going to get my GCSEs. So many people make comments when I’m out with him,” she explained.
“Often people think he’s my little brother and when I tell them he’s mine, their attitude completely changes. Older people especially find it disgusting because obviously their way was to get married first and then have kids,” she added.
McCabe — who regularly posts videos about her life and raising her son — has secured a place to study Health and Social Care at college in September, according to the Liverpool Echo.
“My deputy head and my form tutor especially have been so supportive throughout it all,” she told the publication. “They’re the people who’ve got me through the bad times being a mom.”
