Texas gov claims he’s stopped enough fentanyl to kill entire US in latest battle with Biden
Texas has seized over 422 million deadly doses of fentanyl at the border since 2021 — or “more than enough to kill all Americans,’’ Lone Star Gov. Greg Abbott fumed in a new salvo against President Biden.
“Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Joe Biden’s open border policies,” the Republican governor added in his weekly progress report Friday on Operation Lone Star, his border security plan.
That same day, the Biden administration threatened to sue Texas if Abbott did not remove a controversial floating border barrier made of large orange buoys in the Rio Grande, the river that separates Texas from Mexico and doubles as the international boundary.
The DOJ made good on its threat Monday, filing suit against the state, saying the barrier required federal approve to erect.
“We allege that Texas has flouted federal law by installing a barrier in the Rio Grande without obtaining the required federal authorization,” Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta said a press release. “This floating barrier poses threats to navigation and public safety and presents humanitarian concerns. Additionally, the presence of the floating barrier has prompted diplomatic protests by Mexico and risks damaging U.S. foreign policy.”
Hours earlier, Abbott released a letter he sent to President Joe Biden defending what he called his “sovereign interest” in protecting his state’s border.
“Texas will see you in court, Mr. President,” the three-term governor declared.
Biden’s inability to secure the southern border has turned the Texas-Mexico boundary into the deadliest land crossing in the world, Abbott alleged.
“Neither of us wants to see another death in the Rio Grande River,” his letter to Biden reads. “Yet your open-border policies encourage migrants to risk their lives by crossing illegally through water, instead of safely and legally at a port of entry. Nobody drowns on a bridge.”
A recent video showing migrants entering the US illegally near Eagle Pass, Texas — a border hot spot — seemed to back up Abbott’s claim.
“I spent months waiting for an [immigration] appointment,” an unidentified migrant says in the clip, referring to the Biden’s administration CBP One App.
The app, rolled out under President Trump and extended under Biden, was meant to provide a legal and safe pathway for asylum seekers at the border so they would not have to risk their lives crossing the river or at the hands of smugglers.
“Their frustration is that the CBP One App is not working,” Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Chris Olivarez said in a tweet. “The frustration builds up and that’s why they continue to cross and risk their lives.”
Meanwhile, Abbott is fending off bombshell accusations that he directed Texas Department of Public Safety troopers to push migrant children and babies trying to cross into the US back into the river, according to Hearst Newspapers.
Troopers were reportedly also ordered to deny water to illegal immigrants, even if they were dealing with heat exhaustion.
“No orders or directions have been given under Operation Lone Star that would compromise the lives of those attempting to cross the border illegally,” Abbott said in a statement.
