Texas man charged after 84 migrants found stuffed in dump truck
A Texas man has been busted allegedly trying to smuggle 84 illegal immigrants across the US border by stashing them in the back of a dump truck.
Robert Flores Jr., 38, was arrested Tuesday morning during a traffic stop on Interstate Highway 35 in Cotulla, southwest of San Antonio, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
Dozens of illegal immigrants were found crowded in the truck’s cargo area during the stop, Fox News reported.
Shocking footage and images from the scene showed several young males climbing out of the back of the truck as it was surrounded by law enforcement.
“During the stop, numerous individuals absconded from the truck’s cargo area into the brush,” authorities said in a statement.
Authorities said Flores Jr. intentionally tried to bypass the US Border checkpoint to allegedly smuggle the immigrants into the country.
“Through further investigation, Flores traveled through a private ranch road circumventing the United States Border Patrol checkpoint in Webb County,” authorities said.
Flores Jr. was charged with 84 counts of smuggling of persons.
The illegal immigrants, who hailed from Mexico and Guatemala, were turned over to US Border Patrol.
