The wild transfer window dominated by Chelsea closes today, and at this rate anything could happen – The Warm-Up

TUESDAY’S BIG STORIES

It’s that day again

An immediate apology. By the time you have read this, we could all be behind the times, as Chelsea will have probably signed another player by now. Enzo Fernandez? Who knows, at this rate The Warm-Up is considering a team drive to the Cobham car park (more on car parks in Retro Corner below) just to see if Todd takes a fancy. One of us can do 20 keepy-uppies! And we’re brilliant at One Bounce.

Transfer Deadline Day: All the done deals across Europe’s big five leagues

Anyway. It’s transfer deadline day, and it honestly feels like – after a few fallow years, is that fair to say? – this is going to be a hectic one. Happy to be proved wrong, of course, but there’s something in the air and it has wafted over from west London. That’s right, we’re blaming Chelsea.

Not content with a roughly-£200m spend this month, a club record appears to be in the offing in the form of Fernandez, the World Cup winner with a release clause in his Benfica contract that Chelsea had previously been reluctant to meet.

Throw into the mix the fact that Chelsea could also sell Conor Gallagher and/or Jorginho (evidently not happy with their current midfielders, it seems) and you have a busy end to the busiest of months for the Blues. Oh, and let’s not forget Hakim Ziyech either, seemingly on his way to somewhere (PSG? Newcastle? Harchester United?).

But it’s hectic elsewhere, trust us. You were not mistaken when reading the Harry Maguire to Inter rumours, and that lad you’re not exactly sure how good he is, Pedro Porro, is still being linked with Spurs. Ah, and you’ll witness Nottingham Forest confirm their umpteenth signing of the season when Jonjo Shelvey gives it the thumbs up in the Twitter unveil some time this morning.

And what about this one…?

Cancelo culture

Not entirely sure the headline works, but let’s roll with it…

A few games out of the side – the last two Premier League games against Spurs and Wolves, plus the FA Cup win over Arsenal, to be precise – has seemingly signalled the end for Joao Cancelo in England.

The full-back is set to join Bayern Munich on loan with the option to buy, and it was a move out of nowhere that led many to ask one simple question: what on earth happened?

Well, the Daily Mail appear to have the scoop, with Cancelo said to have reacted angrily to Pep Guardiola’s decision not to start him against Arsenal.

Not only that, Cancelo is said to have brought Bayern’s offer to the table himself given the relationship between manager and player is “beyond repair”. Well, it certainly seems so. Bring on a Champions League showdown. We want to see full Emmanuel Adebayor celebrations.

World-record Russo?

It’s deadline day in the WSL, too, with Arsenal reportedly making a world-record bid for Manchester United’s back-heeling forward Alessia Russo, who is out of contract in the summer.

The Euros winner, nominated for the Puskas Award for that semi-final goal against Sweden, could break the record currently held by Keira Walsh, her England team-mate, who moved to Barcelona from Manchester City for £400k in the summer.

The prospect of breaking a world record just months before Russo is available on a free is perhaps a tad surprising, but a look at the WSL table could tell you exactly why Arsenal want to test United’s resolve.

United currently sit top of the table ahead of Chelsea on goal difference, with Arsenal three points behind on 25 having played a game less. So, yep, it’s going to the wire, and every minute detail could make a difference. This one is definitely worth following throughout the day.

IN OTHER NEWS

Fireman Sean

Dyche! We nearly forgot about Sean Dyche amid all this madness. How could we? Well, Everton finally confirmed his appointment yesterday, with his mission quite simple: keep the club up.

It’s far from an impossible mission, given Everton sit 19th but only two points off 17th, though Dyche has precious little time to work with his players before facing league leaders Arsenal on Saturday. If only there had been a six-week break for Dyche – or Marcelo Bielsa, for that matter – to embed their style on this team.

Nevertheless, it’s Dyche who has 18 games to preserve their ever-present Premier League status, and he’ll need everyone on his side. Everyone.

“We want to bring back a good feeling. We need the fans, we need unity and we need everyone aligned. That starts with us as staff and players,” he said.

“There is quality in this squad. But we have to make them shine. That’s the job of me and my staff.”
