These are some of the cities that set heat records on Sunday.

Cities across the United States set temperature records on Sunday as a summer heat wave spread across the East Coast and parts of the South and Midwest.

Here are some of the places where the heat matched or exceeded the highest temperatures recorded for July 24, according to the National Weather Service:

• Joplin, Mo., reached 105 degrees, breaking its record of 103 degrees set in 2011.

• Newark reached 102 degrees, breaking its record of 99 degrees set in 1999. Sunday also marked the fifth day in a row that the city topped 100 degrees, its longest streak since record keeping began in 1931.

• Boston reached 100 degrees, surpassing the record of 98 degrees set in 1933.

• Philadelphia hit 99 degrees, breaking its previous record of 98 degrees set in 2011.

• Providence, R.I., reached 98 degrees, surpassing the record of 94 degrees set in 1987.

• Albany, N.Y., hit 97 degrees, breaking its record of 96 degrees set in 1941.

• Manchester, N.H., hit 97 degrees, beating the record of 95 degrees set in 2001.

• Reading, Pa., also reached 97 degrees, breaking its record of 96 degrees set in 2016.

• Many cities also tied records:

• Trenton, N.J., tied its record of 98 degrees set in 1910.

• Hartford, Conn., tied its record of 96 degrees set in 1905.

• Allentown, Pa., tied its record of 95 degrees set in 1999.

• Westfield, Mass., reached 95 degrees, tying its record set in 2001.

A number of other places came close to matching their records, including La Guardia Airport, in New York City, where the temperature rose to 97 degrees, just one degree lower than the record high of 98 degrees.
