Tom Cruise ‘ready to pounce’ on second chance with Sofia Vergara: source

Tom Cruise allegedly wants to reconnect with one-time date Sofia Vergara following her split from husband Joe Manganiello.

The “Top Gun” superstar, 61, briefly wooed the “Modern Family” actress, 51, back in 2005, shortly before he fell for Katie Holmes, 44.

“They do have that history already, even if it was more of a brief dalliance than a fully-fledged romance,” a source told UK’s Heat magazine, as per The Mirror.

“They had a special time together partying in the Hollywood Hills and having a blast. Sofia wasn’t really giving out the signals back then that she wanted anything long-term, so it petered out in a totally amicable fashion and they remained friends,” the insider further alleged.

“It’s always eaten away at Tom that he dumped Sofia and chose Katie.”

InStyle reported last year that Cruise was set up with Vegara by his friend, Will Smith, in February 2005.

The pair were pictured out together by paparazzi on just one date and the romance reportedly fizzled out shortly after.

According to Andrew Morton, who penned the best-selling tome, “Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography,” Vergara “was dazzled by Tom’s megawatt smile and amused by the blizzard of phone calls, flowers, and chocolates that followed their first meeting.”

However, the devout Catholic actress soon started worrying that the “Eyes Wide Shut” stud would want her to convert to Scientology.

“It soon became clear that she was being auditioned for the biggest role of her life — Mrs. Tom Cruise,” Morton wrote. “It was made clear that if she took the part, she would have to renounce her Catholic faith and convert to Scientology.”

“She was fundamentally terrified of Scientology,” one of Vergara’s friends told Morton. “She sincerely believed that she would be struck down by God and burn in hell if she joined.”

The reported romance subsequently ended.

Cruise went on to start dating Holmes in April 2005. The couple wed and welcomed their daughter, Suri, the following year. They split in 2012.

The “Cocktail” actor was previously married to Nicole Kidman, 56, from 1990 to 2001. They share two children, Connor and Isabella.

Meanwhile, Vergara was previously wed to her high school sweetheart Joe Gonzalez between 1991 and 1993. The couple share son, Manolo.

Vergara went on to wed actor Joe Manganiello, 46, in 2015, before they shocked fans by announcing their split late last month.

The actors gave an exclusive joint statement to Page Six, saying, “We have made the difficult decision to divorce.

“As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

An insider added of the reason for the split, “Sofía and Joe have been growing apart for a while now and are taking some distance from each other to contemplate their future.”

Manganiello has filed for divorce from Vergara, citing irreconcilable differences.
