Tom Hanks says he’s appeared in some movies he ‘hates’

Despite being one of the biggest movie stars in the world, Tom Hanks isn’t fond of all of his onscreen projects.

The two-time Oscar winner, 66, said that while he had been a part of some successful movies, some of them just simply didn’t turn out the way he had hoped.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Hanks was asked why he gets offended when he hears people say they “hate” a specific film.

“OK, let’s admit this: We all have seen movies that we hate,” he told the publication. “I have been in some movies that I hate. You have seen some of my movies and you hate them.”

Hanks briefly touched on the topic of hating films in his debut novel “The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece” released last month.

The actor explained the process behind filmmaking, saying there are five stages actors go through before the film comes to fruition.

Hanks notes that the stages include landing the role, watching the film, hearing feedback and reading reviews, and later tracking the film’s numbers at the box office.

He specifically used the film “It’s a Wonderful Life” as an example, as well as his 1996 film “That Thing You Do!” which he wrote and directed.

He said the two films were not successful at the time of their respective releases, but later earned the status of “cult classics.”

Despite that, Hanks refused to divulge which of his films he “hates.”

Speaking in Sept. 2022, the actor said he thinks only four of his movies are “pretty good.”

“No one knows how a movie is made — though everyone thinks they do,” he told the outlet.

“I’ve made a ton of movies, and four of them are pretty good, I think, and I’m still amazed at how films come together. From a flicker of an idea to the flickering image onscreen, the whole process is a miracle.”

Hanks first emerged on the scene in the 1980s, when he landed roles in “Splash!,” “The ‘Burbs,” and “Big” – for which he received an Oscar nomination.

But his life changed forever after he won his first Academy Award in 1994 for “Philadelphia.” He took home another Oscar the following year for his role in “Forrest Gump.”

He was nominated an additional three times in later years.

The actor’s other notable credits include two “Toy Story” films, “You’ve Got Mail,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “The Green Mile,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Cast Away,” “Road To Perdition,” and “Elvis.”
