Tory Lanez sentenced to 10 years in prison for Megan Thee Stallion shooting

Tory Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison Tuesday for shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the feet back in July 2020, according to multiple news reports.

Los Angeles prosecutors had asked a judge to give Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, a 13-year sentence.

“If I could change it, I would but I can’t,” Lanez said at his sentencing, reported NBC News.

“Everything I did that night, I take full responsibility,” added Lanez, who wore an orange jumpsuit.

“I truly am just trying to be a better person.”

According to legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, Lanez “spoke for several minutes,” during which time he reportedly called Megan “someone I still care for dearly to this day.”

“We both lost our mothers. We would sit there and drink, and drink until we got numb,” Lanez said of Megan, reported Cuniff.

Lanez also addressed his behavior in the aftermath of the shooting, saying: “I said some very immature things that I shouldn’t have said. I revealed some secrets I shouldn’t have revealed.”

At a press conference after the sentencing, LA District Attorney George Gascón read part of a statement from Megan that was given to the court on Monday.

“Every day, I think of others across the world, or victims of violence, and survivors,” her statement said. “It is truly the most powerless feeling, especially when you question whether the justice system can truly protect you.”

Megan’s message continued: “Fortunately, the district attorney’s office fought for me. I’m incredibly grateful to them and the jury for the attention to the evidence and siding with the truth.

”But if it can happen to me, imagine those who lack the resources and support systems,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, the “What’s Poppin” rapper’s defense attorneys were hoping he would receive probation, be removed from jail and put into a drug treatment program.

Lanez, 31, has been behind bars since December after he was found guilty of three felony charges for shooting and injuring the 28-year-old “WAP” rapper, whose real name is Megan Pete.

Lanez’s legal team’s previously filed a motion for a new trial, but a judge denied it in May.

He was initially charged in October 2020 with one felony count each of assault with a semi-automatic firearm (personal use of a firearm) and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle.

He faced up to 22 years and eight months in prison. His sentencing means he could also be deported to his native Canada.

Megan did not appear in court Monday for the first day of sentencing, but District Attorney Kathy Ta read a statement from the rapper.

Megan said she did not attend the sentencing in person to protect her mental health, explaining she’s “not experienced a single day of peace” since being shot by Lanez.

“He not only shot me, he made a mockery of my trauma. He tried to position himself as a victim and set out to destroy my character and my soul,” Megan continued in her statement.

He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media. He released music videos and songs to damage my character and continue his crusade.”

Megan further claimed: “At first, he tried to deny the shooting ever happened. Then, he attempted to place the blame on my former best friend. In his tantrum of lies, he’s blamed the system, blamed the press and, as of late, he’s using his childhood trauma to shield himself and avoid culpability.”

Lanez reportedly had dozens of friends and family members write letters to the judge about his character and charitable generosity.

One reportedly came from fellow rapper Iggy Azalea, who asked the judge to hand down a sentence that was “transformative, not life-destroying.”

Megan testified in December that the shooting erupted while she and Lanez were driving back from a party at Kylie Jenner’s house. Accompanying them was a bodyguard for Lanez and Kelsey Harris, Megan’s longtime friend.

She said Lanez was upset about being asked to leave the party — and turned around in the SUV to tell Megan she needed to “stop lying” to Harris about their relationship.

The “Savage” rapper told the court she occasionally had a sexual relationship with Lanez, and that Harris — who had a “crush” on Lanez — had become aware of this.

An argument ensued, Megan said, and Lanez called both women “bitches and hoes.”

Megan said the argument turned to their respective musical careers — and she asked to be let out of the SUV. As she left, Lanez allegedly fired several shots at her, shouting, “Dance, bitch!” At least one slug struck her feet.

The car was pulled over by cops minutes later on Hollywood Boulevard.

“I’m in shock. I’m scared,” Megan recalled during her testimony. “I hear the gun going off and I can’t believe he’s shooting at me.”

Megan said she had surgery to remove bullet fragments from her feet. She also claimed that Lanez offered her $1 million to keep quiet about the incident, as he was on probation.

In April, Megan reflected on the incident in Elle magazine, opening up about how she suffered from depression during the whole ordeal.

“I could have let the adversity break me, but I persevered, even as people treated my trauma like a running joke,” she wrote in her first-person story about people in the music industry making light of the situation.

“First, there were conspiracy theories that I was never shot. Then came the false narratives that my former best friend shot me. Even some of my peers in the music industry piled on with memes, jokes, and sneak disses, and completely ignored the fact that I could have lost my life. Instead of condemning any form of violence against a woman, these individuals tried to justify my attacker’s actions.”
