Tottenham a ‘disgrace’ and need a ‘proper manager right now’ says Jamie Carragher after 6-1 loss to Newcastle

Jamie Carragher called Tottenham a “disgrace” after they conceded five goals in a remarkable opening 21 minutes against Newcastle.

Spurs made an awful start at St James’ Park as the hosts ran riot to the delight of their supporters.

Having started the match with a back four, Spurs switched to a back five by bringing Davinson Sanchez on after 23 minutes.

But the damage had been done by then and there was no way back for Spurs, whose top-four hopes now look slim.

The result leaves Spurs in fifth place, six points behind third-placed Newcastle, who have a game in hand, and also six behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who have two games in hand.

Aston Villa, Liverpool and Brighton are also close behind.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher wrote on Twitter: “Newcastle are brilliant, they have been all season. Tottenham are a disgrace!

“How have they gone to a back four for the first time this season, with [Pedro] Porro a full-back that can’t defend and [Ivan] Perisic, who is a winger?

“Get a proper manager in right now, not Conte’s mate.”

Cristian Stellini has been in interim charge of Spurs since Antonio Conte was sacked in March.

Former Spurs defender Danny Rose, who is currently without a club, was shocked by the display from Stellini’s side.

“There were so many mistakes,” he said on Sky Sports.

“All I’ve been thinking of in the first half is, how am I unemployed?! To be 5-0 down after 20 minutes is unheard of for a club that is supposedly a massive club.”

Tottenham would have moved level on points with Newcastle if they had won.

“It’s very embarrassing,” Spurs captain Hugo Lloris told Sky Sports.

“We should apologise to the fans. We didn’t show a good face and we could not match the performance of the Newcastle players.

“We were late in all aspects of the game and we completely missed the first part of the game. The second half is a different story but it’s really painful.

“It is not even about tactics, we just could not fight and we were late. It is difficult right now to assess the performances but there was a lack of pride.”

Lloris was taken off at half-time due to injury and Spurs pulled a goal back in the second half through Kane, only to then concede a sixth.

“You can get punched once or twice but it was like we could not even react or bounce back,” Lloris said.

“Newcastle deserve a lot of credit for starting the game at 100 miles per hour. They knew exactly what to do.”

Spurs’ next two games are against Manchester United and Liverpool.

“There are no words to explain a performance like this,” reflected Stellini.

“The first 25 minutes were the worst I have ever seen. I hope that the system we changed to give us energy was the wrong decision. If it was that, it’s my responsibility. We played with four at the back, and if this is the mistake, it’s my mistake.

“Today, what I can say, is we have to apologise to everyone, and I hope that today is my responsibility because changing system was my decision. Like I said, I hope it was this that was the problem.”
