Track Wildfires in the West

As of Monday, there are just 23 notable fires burning across the Western United States.

After a destructive spring in New Mexico, where megafires set records for the amount of land they burned, the region has since largely been spared of the huge blazes that have come to define wildfire season in places like California and Oregon in recent years.

But as dry and extreme conditions persist, wildfires continue to break out with alarming frequency across the West: At least five that have grown larger than 25,000 acres this year.

In recent years, fires have been burning larger and longer, as the traditional wildfire season continues to start earlier and end later. This year, the peak of fire season is yet to come.
