Trump accuses DA Bragg of ‘prosecutorial misconduct’
Former President Donald Trump lashed out at Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Sunday, accusing him of “prosecutorial misconduct” over his office’s investigation into an alleged hush money payment made in the lead up to the 2016 election on the then-candidate’s behalf.
Trump — who on Saturday claimed he would be arrested Tuesday on charges tied to the probe — insisted “there was no crime” in posts on his Truth Social messaging platform.
“There was no ‘misdemeanor’ here either. There was no crime, period,” Trump, 76, wrote.
“All other of the many Democrat law enforcement officers that looked at it, took a pass. So did [former Manhattan DA] Cy Vance, and so did Bragg. But then, much latter [sic], he changed his mind. Gee, I wonder why? Prosecutorial Misconduct and Interference with an Election. Investigate the Investigators!,” Trump said.
Following media reports last week that Trump was expected to be indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, the former president blasted “ILLEGAL LEAKS FROM A CORRUPT & HIGHLY POLITICAL MANHATTAN DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE” and called on his supporters to protest.
On Sunday, Trump questioned why Bragg initially decided not to pursue the case and then reversed his decision, leading to the possible indictment this week.
“When Alvin Bragg first attained office, he made it very clear that, like many other prosecutors, there was no case against Donald J. Trump. Then the Biden Administration, the Democrats, and the Fake News Media began pushing him, and pushing him hard, and low and behold he said that there might just be a case after all,” the 45th president said.
“I knew what that meant — He was being pushed to do something that shouldn’t be done. He wasn’t willing to stand up to Soros and the Marxists that are destroying our Country!” Trump said, building on postings from Saturday linking Bragg to billionaire Democratic donor George Soros.
Trump, who announced he was seeking the 2024 Republican nomination, also tried to tie President Biden into Bragg’s “assault on Democracy.”
“Biden wants to pretend he has nothing to do with the Manhattan D.A.’s Assault on Democracy when, in fact, he has ’stuffed’ the D.A.’s Office with Department of Injustice people, including one top DOJ operative from D.C. who is actually running the ’Horseface’ Witch Hunt. Bragg is a (Soros) Racist in Reverse, who is taking his orders from D.C.,” Trump said Sunday.
“I beat them TWICE, doing much better the second time, and despite their DISINFORMATION campaign, they don’t want to run against ’TRUMP’ or my GREAT RECORD!,” he continued.
Looking ahead to his possible arrest, Trump urged his national network of supporters to rise up against it.
“THE FAR & AWAY LEADING REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE & FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, WILL BE ARRESTED ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. PROTEST, TAKE OUR NATION BACK!” Trump said in an all-caps message Saturday.
The Manhattan DA’s case is said to center on a $130,000 payment Trump’s former attorney and fixer Michael Cohen paid to porn star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about an alleged sexual encounter she had with the real estate mogul in 2006.
Trump then allegedly reimbursed Cohen, logging the payback as legal expenses.
Cohen pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws in August 2021 and was sentenced to three years in federal prison.
Both Cohen and Daniels have testified before the Manhattan grand jury investigating the case.
Two prosecutors in the DA’s office – Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne – resigned in February 2022 in a disagreement over Bragg’s handling of the investigation into Trump and the Trump Organization, probes Bragg inherited from former DA Cy Vance.
Pomerantz went on to write a book claiming that Trump has “committed serious crimes.”
Following Trump screed into his office on Saturday, Bragg sent a memo to staff that he would not “tolerate attempts to intimidate our office.”
“Our law enforcement partners will ensure that any specific or credible threats against the office will be fully investigated and that the proper safeguards are in place so all 1,600 of us have a secure work environment,” Bragg told his office.
