Trump demands ‘immediate release’ of ‘unredacted affidavit’
Former President Donald Trump is demanding the “immediate release” of the “completely unredacted affidavit” behind what he calls the “horrible and shocking BREAK-IN” of Mar-a-Lago.
Trump, 76, made the demand on his Truth Social late Monday, hours after the Justice Department said it opposed the affidavit’s release because it would be “highly likely to compromise future investigative steps.”
“There is no way to justify the unannounced RAID of Mar-a-Lago, the home of the 45th President of the United States (who got more votes, by far, than any sitting President in the history of our Country!), by a very large number of gun-toting FBI Agents, and the Department of ‘Justice,’” wrote the former commander in chief.
“But, in the interest of TRANSPARENCY, I call for the immediate release of the completely Unredacted Affidavit pertaining to this horrible and shocking BREAK-IN,” he said of last week’s search.
“Also, the Judge on this case should recuse!” he insisted of Judge Bruce W. Reinhart, who had mysteriously recused himself in a case surrounding his 2016 presidential race opponent, Hillary Clinton, in June
His demand came after the DOJ objected to efforts seeking to unseal the affidavit, warning that it “implicates highly classified material” as well as “highly sensitive information about witnesses” and “specific investigative techniques.”
“If disclosed, the affidavit would serve as a roadmap to the government’s ongoing investigation, providing specific details about its direction and likely course, in a manner that is highly likely to compromise future investigative steps,” federal prosecutors wrote in a court filing.
The DOJ said in a footnote that the release of even a redacted version of the affidavit “would not serve any public interest” due to the number of details that would have to be omitted.
“Disclosure of the government’s affidavit at this stage would also likely chill future cooperation by witnesses whose assistance may be sought as this investigation progresses, as well as in other high-profile investigations,” the department’s filing warned.
The unprecedented Aug. 8 raid on the Mar-a-Lago resort was related to Trump’s possible mishandling of classified documents, according to court records unsealed Friday.
Trump, however, has always pushed for the docs to be released.
