Trump narrowly beats Biden in hypothetical 2024 rematch: poll

Former President Trump would edge out President Biden if the 2024 election comes down to a rematch between the two, a new poll suggests.

Trump leads the hypothetical race with 49% to Biden’s 45% among nationwide registered voters, according to a survey conducted by SSRS for CNN.

Although the margin is small, it comes just days after separate polls indicate the 45th president is notching considerable leads just one year out from Election Day — including in five of six key battleground states.

The SSRS survey shows that voter’s faith in Biden has continued to dwindle over the last two and a half years, with 61% stating they disapprove of his handling of the country, 42% of whom said they feel “strongly” about their dissatisfaction.

The 39% approval rating makes the lowest a modern president has seen in his re-election bid, including Trump, who stood at 41% a year before he was unseated from the presidency.

While the poll indicates the two one-term presidents will likely go head-to-head next year, it also suggests that neither is overtly winning the affection of the American public.

Only 36% see Biden as favorable as opposed to 59% who see him as unfavorable, while 38% are favorable and 56% unfavorable for Trump.

A jaw-dropping 72% of those polled believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, with 61% of voters finding the commander-in-chief to be contributing to the problem.

By comparison, 57% found Trump to be “part of the problem” and 42% saw him as part of the solution.

Biden’s age — which has long been a point of contention among his opponents — is a strong detriment to his re-election campaign.

Just a quarter of Americans believe the 80-year-old “has the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively as President,” while 53% feel Trump does despite only being three years younger.

When it comes to Trump’s weaknesses, however, the public finds strength in Biden.

Roughly half of voters said the commander in chief respects the rule of law compared to just 35% who say Trump does.

The poll indicates a Biden-Trump rematch is the most likely match for the 2024 election.

Only a third of voters believe Trump is honest and trustworthy, compared to 42% that find Biden to be.

Overall, half of voters said there was no chance they would cast a vote for Biden compared to 48% stating they would not support Trump under any circumstances.

Just 4% of undecided voters said they could be swayed to support the incumbent, and just 2% would consider voting for Trump.

The SSRS poll surveyed 1,514 adults drawn from a probability-based panel from Oct. 27 through Nov. 2 and has an error margin of about 3.1 points.
