Trump says he’ll soon be indicted by special counsel Jack Smith over bid to overturn 2020 election

Former President Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that special counsel Jack Smith would announce charges in connection with his attempts to overturn the 2020 election at 5 p.m.

“I hear that Deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024, will be putting out yet another Fake Indictment of your favorite President, me, at 5:00 P.M.,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Why didn’t they do this 2.5 years ago? Why did they wait so long? Because they wanted to put it right in the middle of my campaign. Prosecutorial Misconduct!”

The indictment would be the second brought by Smith against the 77-year-old Trump, who already faces 40 counts in connection with allegations that he hoarded national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.

The grand jury investigating the former president met for several hours at the federal courthouse in Washington, DC Tuesday, but broke up a couple of hours before Trump posted about the looming indictment.

Donald Trump’s White House Ellipse speech on Jan. 6, 2021 has been panned by critics who say it got the rioters all fired up.
