‘Twister’ sequel, ‘Twisters,’ follows 1996 blockbuster

Hold on to your hats! “Twister” is finally getting a sequel.

A follow-up to the 1996 storm-chasing blockbuster, which will be titled “Twisters,” is in the works, according to Deadline.

Steven Spielberg reportedly “flipped” for the script, written by “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith.

The original film starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, who died in 2017. The movie followed Hunt’s Dr. Jo Harding and a group of fellow weather-watchers as they tested Dorothy, a tornado data-gathering device conceptualized by her ex, Bill (played by Paxton).

“Twisters” will focus on Jo and Bill’s daughter, who caught the storm-chasing bug from her parents, Deadline reports.

Sources told Deadline they are hoping to bring Hunt back for the sequel, but it’s unclear whether or not she signed on. Paxton, meanwhile, died of complications from heart surgery at the age of 61.

Frank Marshall has been named producer, though there is no director as of now. Deadline reported “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was the original choice, but he backed out when he committed to the Formula One racing movie with Brad Pitt for Apple.
