United Cup 2023: Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek in star-studded line-up at event ahead of Australian Open 2024
Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek are set to play in the new-look United Cup at the end of the year as part of a star-studded line-up in Australia.
The mixed-team event in Perth and Sydney will feature nine players from the men’s top 20 and five players from the women’s top 10, with the draw set to take place on Monday, October 23.
Four-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek, alongside Hubert Hurkacz, will lead Team Poland as the top seeds, while Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari will lead second-seed country Greece.
The USA won the first edition of the tournament last year, and their team will be led by Jessica Pegula and Taylor Fritz.
France, Czech Republic, Croatia, Canada, Great Britain, China and the Netherlands make up the top 10 nations in the seeding.
Debutants Serbia are seeded 13th despite being skippered by world No. 1 and 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic.
Caroline Garcia, Marketa Vondrousova, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Qinwen Zheng, Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev are among the other star entries that will captain their respective nations.
Great Britain will be led by Cameron Norrie and Katie Boulter, while Daniel Evans, Francesca Jones, Neal Skupski and Maia Lumsden are also on the team.
There is room for two more countries, which will be decided in a month’s time based on the rankings.
There will be a three-team group stage played in a round-robin format, with nine teams in each city, followed by quarter-finals featuring the group winners from each city, with one last eight spot in each city awarded to the best runner-up.
Sydney will host the consequent semi-finals and final.
New for this year’s tournament – its second edition – each tie will be determined in one session and will include one men’s singles and one women’s singles match featuring the No.1 ranked singles players, followed by one mixed doubles match.
