US Open 2023: Day 2 Order of play and schedule – When are Carlos Alcaraz, Venus Williams playing?
The 2023 US Open in New York is now fully underway, with some of the sport’s biggest names beginning their respective campaigns at Flushing Meadows, which includes defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
The world No. 1 begins his title defence against the German Dominik Koepfer at the Arthur Ashe stadium on Tuesday evening.
Many are hoping to see another epic battle with Novak Djokovic in the final Grand Slam of the calendar year, and the Serb will be expected to have already claimed his place in round two after featuring on the opening day of action.
Wildcard entry and one of the sport’s greatest-ever players, Venus Williams, is also scheduled to feature on Arthur Ashe when she takes on the Belgian Greet Minnen. It will be some spectacle to see the two-time US Open winner compete in the sport’s biggest arena once again, while British interest comes from Andy Murray’s first-round clash against the Frenchman, Corentin Moutet.
Top women’s match – Camilla Giorgi v Jessica Pegula
Fresh after winning her second WTA 1000 title in Montreal, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula takes on the Italian Camilla Giorgi on Tuesday afternoon.
Pegula’s credentials were enhanced with impressive victories over her compatriot Coco Gauff and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in Canada to claim her joint-biggest trophy to date, following victory in Guadalajara in 2022.
She is expected to go far here in home soil after reaching the quarter-finals in five of the seven majors since the start of last year, but is still in search of a first semi-final appearance.
The omens do not look good for Giorgi, who has not progressed past the second round in each her previous nine appearances at Flushing Meadows.
It is fair to say that New York is not a happy hunting ground for the world No.52, who is experiencing a mediocre season at best, with her highlight coming in a WTA 250 title victory at Merida in February.
Her record against Pegula does not make for pleasant reading either and is at the wrong end of an 8-2 record against the American.
Top men’s match – Carlos Alcaraz v Dominik Koepfer
The evening session on Arthur Ashe sees world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz begin his title defence against the German Dominik Koepfer.
It is the first time that the Spaniard has ever come up against Koepfer, and this presents an intriguing proposition for the 20-year-old. who stormed to victory here in 2022.
Since beating Casper Ruud in last year’s final, Alcaraz has won six more titles and includes a pulsating five-set victory over Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last month.
The Serb may have gained revenge at the Cincinnati Masters, but the prospect of another meeting between the pair is whetting may tennis fans’ appetites.
Koepfer will have something to say about that though, with the German producing a series of impressive displays on the hardcourt surface.
He reached the Atlanta Open quarter-finals, the semi-finals at Los Cabos and a third-round appearance at the Winston-Salem Open.
The 29-year-old has given both Alex de Minaur and Jiri Lehecka a run for their money in recent weeks, but one expects this to be a one hurdle too far.
Brit watch
Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie are both in action on day two, with the former preparing for a first-round encounter against Corentin Moutet.
Murray appears to have put his injury problems on the back burner and his decision to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters has paid off.
Men’s British No. 1, Norrie, begins his campaign against the against the Russian Alexander Shevchenko, while Jack Draper and Dan Evans are both in action in tussles with Romanian, Radu Albot and Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan respectively.
