US soccer star Megan Rapinoe promoting fundraiser supporting relief for children in Gaza

Israel is entering its third week of war against Hamas after the terrorist group infiltrated the country on Oct. 7, and killed more than 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians. Thousands of rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip toward highly populated areas.

In response, Israeli airstrikes have pounded Hamas in Gaza, killing thousands. Officials believe there are an estimated 1,700 Palestinians with European or U.S. citizenship in Gaza.

American soccer icon Megan Rapinoe has been outspoken on a long list of social issues throughout her career, including, LGBTQ+ rights, racial inequality, voter rights and gender and pay equity. She now appears to be supporting a fundraiser that is seeking relief for children in Gaza.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a link to the “Urgent Relief for Gaza’s Children” fundraiser is featured under Rapinoe’s Instagram account.

The campaign was created by Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. According to the PCRF’s bio, the Ohio-based charity organization is a “nonprofit humanitarian organization providing medical relief to children in the Middle East.” The decorated soccer star has faced some backlash for promoting the charity, and not publicly addressing the conflict.

Her most recent Instagram post shows a photo of her in the OL Reign uniform after the Oct. 20 National Women’s Soccer League quarterfinal game against the Angel City FC. “Perfect way to end on last game at Lumen Field,” Rapinoe captioned the photo along with a peace sign hand emoji.

“I do know my impact but it’s one thing to know it, and another thing to really feel it and see it. To see some of the signs and the pink wigs and see what that means to people,” Rapinoe said to the 34,130 fans in attendance.

“It’s hard to put just this deep sense of gratitude and joy and thankfulness for being able to have a moment like this into words.”

She became one of the brightest stars in U.S. women’s soccer and delivered some of the most clutch performances in the sport’s history. She is a two-time World Cup winner and competed in the final World Cup of her career this past summer.
