Utah’s Lake Powell houseboat fire has two dozen people leap into water: video

More than two dozen people — including a two-month-old baby — desperately leaped into a Utah lake Wednesday after their houseboat burst into flames.

Hair-raising footage shows a man passing the tiny infant out of the doomed vessel to a family member floating in the water as the intense fire rages at the bow.

Heavy plumes of black smoke billowed from the two-story ship as other boaters raced across Lake Powell to help the family of 29 to safety.

“Jump! Jump!” one of the good Samaritans can be heard screaming. “Get the baby!”

Luckily, all 29 boaters were safely evacuated before the ship burned to the hull and sank to the bottom of the Glen Canyon National Park lake floor, 12 News reported.

The family had only been on board for 45 minutes when they heard what sounded like an explosion.

“We heard a big boom! Not knowing what it was, we went to investigate. We found the motor on the houseboat had exploded and caught on fire,” Maddy Tolman told KSL.com.

“It was about five to 10 minutes between the explosion and when the boat was engulfed in flames.”

Everybody jumped off the burning boat and swam to other ships that had been cruising in the Warm Creek area of the reservoir when the incident unfolded.

Multiple children were among the survivors, including the two-month-old infant, an 8-year-old diabetic and three more elementary-aged kids.

“Luckily, no one was hospitalized. No one walked away with any injuries,” Tolman said.

“We’re grateful to be alive and grateful for those who saved our loved ones by stopping to scoop us out of the water.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities said.
