Valerie Grenier stuns field to claim second straight giant slalom win at Kranjska Gora in Slovenia
Canadian Valerie Grenier’s love affair with Kranjska Gora continues as she repeated as giant slalom winner at the Slovenian resort.
One year on from her maiden World Cup victory at the venue, a second-run charge saw Grenier do it again in convincing fashion.
“It’s crazy, I have no words,” said Grenier. “I’m so happy and proud. I wanted to do as well as I could and I was just hoping for a podium when I woke up this morning.”
Grenier’s first-run effort of 56.90 seconds placed her fourth at the flip, nearly half a second behind Petra Vlhova.
Vlhova struggled on the second run and the Canadian came into her own, posting a stunning 53.61 at the second attempt to claim gold.
“I was pretty mad at myself for the mistakes in the first run,” said Grenier.
“I wanted the win after that because I was so annoyed.”
Silver went to Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland and Italy’s Federica Brignone collected bronze. There was a rare off day for World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin, who came ninth.
