‘Very happy’ Gael Monfils upsets Stefanos Tsitsipas as Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev both lose in Toronto
Gael Monfils rolled back the years as he upset fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Canadian Open in Toronto.
Playing only his 11th match of the season due to injury, the 36-year-old produced a brilliant display to win 6-4 6-3.
“I knew that Stef had a lot of confidence,” said Monfils.
“He would try to go for his shots. I tried to put a lot of balls in, tried to hit quite heavy and not let him dictate too much. I think I did it well.
“I was very happy with the way I was moving on the court again.
“For me, it’s always key to have great movement. So I was happy with that.”
Former Canadian Open champion Daniil Medvedev beat Italian Matteo Arnaldi 6-2 7-5 to book a meeting with Lorenzo Musetti in the last 16.
Medvedev, who won the title in 2021, returned to the court for the first time since his run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon in July and controlled the match against Arnaldi to extend his impressive record in Toronto.
”Yeah I felt great,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview.
“I could have done a little bit better in the second set, but at the same time, I saved break points in two or three games, so a pretty good match.
“From here I need to improve.”
Alexander Zverev suffered a humbling 6-1 6-2 defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Davidovich Fokina converted all four of his break points without reply to set up a clash with third seed Casper Ruud on Thursday.
Taylor Fritz beat Ugo Humbert 7-6(7) 3-6 6-3 but sixth seed Andrey Rublev lost 6-4 6-3 to Mackenzie McDonald.
