Victoria and David Beckham break silence on 2003 cheating rumors: ‘It was a nightmare’

“Time Goes By,” but some things you never forget.

Twenty years after her husband’s alleged affair, Victoria Beckham has broken her silence about the moment that almost broke her marriage.

In the new tell-all Netflix documentary “Beckham,” the Spice Girl reflects on the time David Beckham, 48, was accused of breaking his vows while playing in Spain in 2003 after transferring from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

“It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us,” Victoria reveals. “Here’s the thing — we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest.

In the documentary, premiering Wednesday, Oct. 4, Victoria describes the pain and anguish she felt while struggling to keep her marriage with David afloat.

“You know, up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other,” she said. “But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare. It was an absolute circus — and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town, right? Unless you’re in it.”

Although the Beckhams have always denied claims that David actually had an affair — and an alleged other woman is not named in the four-part documentary — when asked if she resented her husband at the time, Victoria answers in the affirmative.

“If I’m being totally honest, yes, I did,” she admitted. “It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life. It wasn’t that I felt unheard because I was always mindful of the focus that he needed.”

David addresses the controversy as well in the documentary, admitting, “There was some horrible stories which were difficult to deal with. It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage.”

But despite the drama, their marriage survived.

Just a few months before tying the knot in 1999, David and Victoria welcomed their first son, Brooklyn. A few years later, they expanded their family with sons Romeo, in 2002, and Cruz three years later. Finally, in 2011, they welcomed a daughter, Harper.

Asked by director Fisher Stevens how they “survived” the headline fodder and negative press, David explained, “Every time that we woke up we felt, you know, there was something else and, you know, we felt that, we both felt at the time that we were not losing each other but drowning.

“But ultimately, it’s our private life,” he added. “There were some days I thought, ‘How am I going to go to work? How am I going to go on that training pitch and look as if nothing is wrong?’ I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes. How am I going to do this?”

David played four seasons with Real Madrid winning the La Liga championship in his final season.

In addition to candid interviews with the couple, “Beckham” features chats with family, friends and, according to Netflix “footballing figures who have been part of his journey,” including Gary Neville, Eric Cantona, Sir Alex Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Mel C (aka Sporty Spice), Diego Simeone, Carlos Queiroz, Luís Figo, Míchel Salgado, Florentino Pérez, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo Nazário and Fabio Capello, as well as David’s mom and dad.
