Video shows Patriots fan hit in head in fatal confrontation

Distressing, new video has emerged of the moment a Patriots fan and dad of two got into a physical altercation with an apparent Dolphins supporter at Gillette Stadium – right before he was fatally knocked out.

Dale Mooney, 53, of New Hampshire, is seen wearing a Patriots jersey as he inserts himself in the 300-tier-section crowd at the stadium during Sunday’s game, footage posted by WCVB shows.

During a violent struggle, the 6-foot-3 Mooney is seen being hit in the temple and going down. The person who launched the blow is not clearly seen.

“I just saw a movement within that group that really denoted that there was some physical altercation going on and some people trying to break it up, some people trying to — you know — kind of distance themselves away from it,” Keith Noonan, was attending the game with his son, told the outlet.

“My son was a little shaken by this. I was shaken as well,” he added.

Other witnesses said two groups of fans had engaged in verbal confrontations shortly before the tragic incident, which occurred about 11 p.m.

EMTs performed CPR on Mooney, who never regained consciousness.

“That’s where we got a direct view of these heroes doing everything they could to try to save this man’s life,” Noonan told WCVB.

Mooney was rushed to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he was pronounced dead around midnight.

Another fan, Devyn Kirwin, said he was “shocked” by the fatal incident during his first Patriots game.

“Especially to know that it happened right behind me and there wasn’t much I could do about it,” he told NBC 10. “Everyone in that section had to get moved.”

In a statement, Gillette Stadium said: “We are heartbroken to learn of the tragic passing of Dale Mooney, a lifelong Patriots fan and 30-year season ticket member, who died while attending last Sunday night’s Patriots game.”

“We continue to work with local authorities to assist them with their ongoing investigation. We extend our sincerest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Dale’s family and to all those who are mourning his loss,” it added Tuesday.

Authorities have not said whether Mooney’s death was directly related to the fight. Autopsy results are pending.

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said no charges have yet been filed.

The Massachusetts State Police is leading the investigation.

Mooney’s grieving wife, Lisa, described her late husband as a “good dad’ to their two adult children and said that “it takes a lot to get him mad. He has the patience of a saint.

“I don’t know what happened,” she said, adding that she is confident that footage will show Dale did not throw a single punch.

“I just feel numb. I just can’t even believe this is for real,” Lisa told WCVB.
