Voice Notes: Ons Jabeur accepts doubles invitation from Frances Tiafoe, aims for US Open appearance

Ons Jabeur has accepted an offer from Frances Tiafoe to play mixed doubles together, with the Tunisian suggesting an appearance at the US Open.

Tiafoe made the plea as part of Eurosport’s Voice Notes series, after being hosted in Tunisia by Jabeur in May.

The American is enjoying a superb season, winning his second ATP Tour title of 2023 in Stuttgart last week to move into the top 10.

He said: “This is Frances Tiafoe here, just asking one very important question – when are you planning for us to play mixed doubles together?

“It would be an honour to share a court with you. Especially after how well you took care of me in your country.

“I want to bring my talents out with you on court and [we’re the] two people with the softest hands on the Tour, so let’s make it happen.”

Jabeur, the world No. 6, accepted the invitation and pitched the idea of teaming up at Tiafoe’s home Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows in August and September.

“My bro! I was so happy that you came to Tunisia and hopefully next time you’ll come back,” she said.

“Mixed doubles, I was thinking US Open, we would have an amazing crowd there and I would enjoy playing doubles with you.

“You’re an amazing player and [it’s] always fun to see you. Speak soon and definitely come back to Tunisia.”

Both players are currently preparing for Wimbledon, where Jabeur finished as runner-up last year.

The Tunisian suffered a blow in the build-up though, losing her opening match against Jule Niemeier at the Berlin Open last Tuesday, where she was defending champion.
However, at Eastbourne this week she won her opening match 6-3 6-2 against Jasmine Paolini to record her first win on grass this season.

Tiafoe was the fourth seed at Queen’s this week, but suffered a second-round defeat to compatriot Sebastian Korda.

Jabeur also answered a question from Judy Murray about more women being actively involved in professional tennis. Jabeur agrees with Murray about the importance of having greater equality in the game.

She said: “It is important to me to see a lot of women, either as tennis players or journalists or referees, or any other woman just working [in the game].

“It’s very important to me and hopefully I’m trying to change that and give the best example.

“I want to say [to women] please don’t be afraid, dare to dream and I cannot wait to see you all here.”
