We Want to Know What New York City’s Reading Overhaul Means for You
New York City is confronting a longstanding reading crisis after the pandemic worsened outcomes for children in districts across the nation. More than half of city students failed state reading exams last year, and proficiency rates were even lower for Black and Latino children.
Now, the city’s schools chancellor, David C. Banks, is making reading his central focus. The city will join many districts across the nation, who have declared that old approaches did not serve all children and who have now overhauled curriculum to require evidence-based strategies.
We want to hear from you: What’s on your mind about the new plan? Had your school already begun changing how it teaches children to read? What do you think is working, and what isn’t? We will not publish your submission — including any details about your school or child — without contacting you first. We may use your information to follow up with you.
