Wins for O’Sullivan, Williams, Trump and Selby on day one

The big names came through mostly unscathed in the held over qualifying matches on day one of the Welsh Open.

AN HOUR AGO

Joe Perry made a winning start to his title defence with a 4-0 whitewash of Mark King, while Shaun Murphy produced a similarly emphatic performance to drub Brazil’s Victor Sarkis 4-0.
In the afternoon, a scrappy but ultimately comfortable display saw Ronnie O’Sullivan advance against Oliver Lines, as Mark Williams was made to work for his win against Michael White, fighting back from 2-0 down to beat his compatriot 4-2.

Elsewhere, John Higgins whitewashed Alexander Ursenbacher 4-0, Neil Robertson beat late call-up Andrew Higginson 4-1.

The shock of the day came as lost Stuart Bingham was eliminated 4-1 to Welshman Jackson Page.

In the evening, Judd Trump overcame a slow start to whitewash David Grace while Mark Selby beat Jamie O’Neil 4-2.
