West Ham 3-1 Chelsea – Michail Antonio scores stunner as 10-man Hammers beat rivals in entertaining London derby

Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio struck second-half goals as 10-man West Ham beat Chelsea 3-1 in an action-packed derby at the London Stadium.

The Hammers made the perfect start when £30m summer signing James Ward-Prowse marked his debut with an assist inside seven minutes.

Nayef Aguerd was the beneficiary as he rose highest to head the former Southampton midfielder’s right-wing corner past Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea responded and deservedly levelled when 19-year-old Carney Chukwuemeka rifled a superb solo strike into the far corner for his first senior goal just shy of the half-hour mark.

The lively Raheem Sterling then earned Chelsea a penalty two minutes before half-time, but Enzo Fernandez’s low spot-kick was well saved by Alphonse Areola.

The pattern of Blues dominance threatened to continue following the break, but it was the hosts who stole in front when Ward-Prowse chalked up a second assist, releasing Antonio to surge free and thunder a sublime, low strike into the far corner.

Chelsea turned to British record signing, Moises Caicedo as he made his debut from the bench and their hopes appeared to be further boosted when Aguerd was sent off for a second bookable offence 23 minutes from time.

However, West Ham defended for their lives and then sealed the points when Caicedo brought down Emerson, allowing Paqueta to convert a stoppage-time penalty.

The result leaves Mauricio Pochettino still waiting for his first competitive win in charge of The Blues and moves The Hammers up to sixth spot in the fledgling standings.

Next up, Chelsea host top-flight newcomers Luton Town on Friday night while West Ham visit high-flying Brighton on Saturday.

Talking Point – Lift off for West Ham, but the same old problems hinder Chelsea.

The feel-good factor will continue to bubble along nicely for West Ham as David Moyes picked up his first win over Pochettino courtesy of a resilient display that bodes very well for the UEFA Europa League Conference champions.

There was defensive organisation and grit for long spells, particularly when The Hammers went down to 10 men, but also signs that they have a real threat at set pieces and on the counter attack.

Moyes had been frustrated by his club’s lack of early transfer activity in the market, but it looks like they have made some shrewd signings that suggests another positive campaign lies ahead, both at home and abroad.

As for Chelsea, the same old problems were exposed again. Lapses at the back were punished while the lack of cutting edge in attack remains unresolved. The visitors dominated and created chances but lacked the composure in front of goal.

Pochettino has spoken of needing further attacking reinforcements and this showing only enhances those claims. The Argentine coach will feel he will get it right given time to gel his new squad of players, but this was the type of blow that Frank Lampard and Graham Potter will feel was all-too familiar for them last season.

Player of the match – James Ward-Prowse (West Ham)

The midfielder immediately endeared himself to the West Ham faithful with a couple of assists that proved crucial to a famous victory. His set-piece delivery will be a real weapon as the season progresses given The Hammers’ aerial threat, but his composure and industry will also complement an area of the side that still has Edson Alvarez to bed in as a replacement for the departed Declan Rice.
