What would Chelsea be getting from Julian Nagelsmann? – ‘Football-obsessed, eloquent, tactics expert’

According to widespread reports, Chelsea are zeroing in on former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann to replace Graham Potter.

Potter was sacked on Sunday evening after the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa left the club 11th in the table, 12 points off Manchester United in fourth.
And despite a number of names being linked to the job it is Nagelsmann, who was recently fired by Bayern during the international break, who has been most prominently linked to the role.

Tuchel: Potter’s Chelsea sacking ‘didn’t trigger big emotions in me’

It is currently unclear whether or not he would be open to taking the job at this stage, or whether he would wait until the summer and see what other jobs became available. Bruno is currently the interim manager.

In order to get a bit more of a handle on Nagelsmann, and why exactly he was fired, we got in touch with Thomas Gaber from Eurosport Germany.

The first thing it feels as if we should get out of the way is why Nagelsmann was fired.

For those who don’t remember, Nagelsmann was sacked during the international break with Bayern second in the Bundesliga, just a point behind Borussia Dortmund. Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was brought in with a key title clash against Dortmund, as well as the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, in mind. Tuchel got off to the perfect start with a comprehensive 4-2 win over Dortmund on Saturday.

So what went wrong?

“The sporting consistency was missing,” explains Gaber. “Bayern had lost ten points to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga in 2023 by the time he was sacked.

“Bayern had repeated phases of inexplicably weak games. In addition, according to the club’s management, there were problems in the locker room, although many players deny this.”

So in that case what kind of manager would Chelsea be getting should they hire Nagelsmann?

Chelsea would get a football-obsessed, eloquent coach.

“Nagelsmann is considered a proven tactics expert in Germany who leaves nothing to chance. Bayern were totally convinced before signing him that he could shape an era despite his young age.”

Gaber went on to say that “PSG coach Galtier had to admit after the Champions League duel that he had been outcoached by Nagelsmann.

“He is able to adjust the players emotionally and tactically very well for the big games.”

But he did also point out: “On the other hand, he has not succeeded in giving the players the right mindset against supposedly small opponents.

“Highly talented players like Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry repeatedly fell into a performance slump under Nagelsmann. He was also accused of using Sadio Mane in the wrong position.”

So does that mean that Chelsea fans should be worried about the possibility of their club moving to hire Nagelsmann?

“No, not really.” Gaber says. “Tuchel did a good job in Munich in his first game [when asked about the comprehensive victory in the new manager’s game in charge].

“But Bayern have won all eight Champions League games this season and dominated PSG at times. Nagelsmann is capable of leading Chelsea to success again in a short time.”

Gaber did say that the reaction in Germany to the news of Nagelsmann being linked to Chelsea has not been one of surprise.

He says that it was expected that he would be linked to the top jobs in the world. He had already been linked to the vacancy at Spurs, as well as a potential opening at Real Madrid if Carlo Ancelotti were to leave in the summer, with the Italian heavily linked to the Brazil job.

However he did echo a number of other reports coming out of Germany that it is not expected within the country that Nagelsmann will join a new club before the end of the season.

Instead it is expected that he will take some time out between now and the summer and then evaluate all possibilities when it comes to his next move.
