In the 2020 presidential race, Kamala Harris had created a buzz: 20,000 people attended her kickoff. In a Democratic debate, she caught Joseph R. Biden Jr. off guard on the topic of school desegregation. But a cash crunch forced her to slash her New Hampshire field operation before the primary. By the following month, she had dropped out of the race.
“I’m not a billionaire,” she said at the time.
