When does the Premier League January transfer window shut? When are European deadlines? What are deal sheets?

The 2023 January transfer window shuts this week, which means the hours are ticking by for clubs to get deals done in a bid to boost their chances for the second half of the season.

However, there are a few differences on when the window is definitively shut, and for some leagues there is flexibility to gain a couple of hours more if a deal is done in principle.

With plenty of big-money moves still potentially to be completed in the coming hours, including Enzo Fernandez’s British-record transfer to Chelsea, we break down the finer details of transfer deadline day across Europe.

The Premier League transfer window closes on Tuesday, January 31 at 11pm (all times GMT).

When does the transfer window close for the EFL?

The transfer window closes at the same time, 11pm, for EFL clubs. Scottish clubs, however, can make deals until 11.59pm.

  • The Bundesliga in Germany finishes sooner, at 5pm.
  • Serie A in Italy ends its business at 7pm.

Can deals be done late?

Teams can buy players up until the end of their own association’s deadline agreements.

They cannot buy players late, but they can use deal sheets if agreements are not struck until late on.

What are the rules on deal sheets?

Deal sheets are used to give clubs time to supply additional documentation for transfers that are concluded close to the deadline.

A deal sheet gives clubs a further two hours to submit all relevant documentation, but can only be used when there are fewer than two hours left in a window.

This applies for all-English transfers only. Cross-border deals have to be completed by midnight for the FIFA Transfer Matching System.

Which players may still move before the end of the transfer window?

There are a list of possible targets who could still make a late switch here.
