Will Tidball takes gold in men’s Scratch, Germany smash WR in women’s Team Sprint, Chloe Dygert wins gold

Will Tidball emerged from the shadows to time his run to perfection for a brilliant gold medal in the Men’s Scratch at the UCI Cycling World Championships.

In what was a cagey affair, Tidball kept his powder dry for long periods of the race.

It looked like the gold had disappeared with four laps remaining as Alex Vogel of Switzerland dashed away from the pack.

The chase took an age to get organised but the power went from Vogel’s legs with a lap remaining and Tidball hit the front on the final bend to take gold in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Germany broke the world record in the Women’s Team Sprint.

Sophie Capewell, Lauren Bell and Emma Finucane produced a brilliant effort for Great Britain, but Germany took the gold, smashing the world record with a time of 45.848. GB stopped the clock at 45.923.

Chloe Dygert lived up to her star billing by taking gold in the Women’s Individual Pursuit.

The American moved into an early advantage and was relentless in beating Franziska Brausse.

Such was Dygert’s superiority, she made the catch on the final lap and stopped the clock in a time of 3:17.926 – which was a second off her own world record from 2020.

In the race for bronze, Great Britain’s Neah Evans missed out on a medal as victory went to Bryony Botha of New Zealand.

Great Britain’s bid to defend the Men’s Team Pursuit title ended in disappointment as they crashed out in the qualifying round.

The GB men’s quartet of Charlie Tanfield, Dan Bigham, Ethan Vernon and Ollie Wood failed to make it out of qualifying after the former hit the deck.

Tanfield was third wheel – with the time taken on the third rider to cross the line – after Wood had swung off with a lap to run.

But Tanfield crashed and appeared to injure his shoulder, which denied the GB team the chance of a restart.

“Following his crash in this morning’s Men’s Team Pursuit qualification, Charlie Tanfield was assessed immediately by the on-site medical team before being taken to hospital for further treatment,” read a statement from British Cycling. “We wish Charlie a very speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on his bike soon.

“Unfortunately, the Men’s Team Pursuit riders will not progress in the competition.”
