Wimbledon 2023: Daniil Medvedev into first SW19 quarter-final, Stefanos Tsitsipas stunned by Christopher Eubanks

Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the first time on Monday, while there was a shock on Court 2 as Stefanos Tsitsipas was sent packing by Christopher Eubanks.

Medvedev had been in the ascendancy on No. 1 Court until Jiri Lehecka’s retired hurt, with the world No. 3 holding a 6-4 6-2 lead.

Lehecka perhaps looked to be suffering from the after-effects of his punishing third-round win over Tommy Paul that took close to four hours to complete.

Speaking afterwards on court to BBC Sport, Medvedev said: “I honestly didn’t know about his injury until he retired.

“I saw that maybe his movement is a little bit restricted. I thought it’s not going to cause him enough trouble but then when he retired I was like ‘yeah okay, I see it’s different.’

“During the match, unfortunately you don’t have any other choice but to fight for every point because even with me it happened, you think you’re injured and then you win one game, one break and then you get back into the match, then you’re like ‘maybe I should continue playing’ and then you win the match.”

Medvedev asserted himself on proceedings from the start against his world No. 37 opponent, breaking in the first game and holding with relative ease on his own delivery to seal the opener 6-4.

Lehecka was then broken again – to love – in game three of the second set, and Medvedev then forged further clear when grabbing another break at 4-2 up.

He served out the set before Lehecka conceded.

When quizzed about his impending first quarter-final at SW19, Medvedev added: “The thing is that it’s my fifth Wimbledon and I was not very successful but I’ve never lost on Court One so I feel sorry that for the quarters I am probably going to play on Centre Court.

“I’m like, ‘can I just continue here?’ I love it. I never lost so far here. I’m really happy and looking forward to my next match. Hopefully I can give 100%.”

Medvedev will take on Eubanks in his quarter-final after the unseeded American came back from two sets to one down to knock out Tsitsipas.

Eubanks, who has never before been past the second round of a major, faced a long way back when his Greek opponent took the third set – after the pair had shared the first two sets – but he recovered magnificently to triumph and continue his fairytale run.

Meanwhile, sixth seed Rune fought back to beat Grigor Dimitrov on No. 1 Court.

The Dane looked in deep trouble after losing the first set and trailing 4-2 in the second, but mounted a fine comeback to progress 3-6 7-6(6) 7-6(4) 6-3.

In the men’s doubles, it was defeat for British pair Toby Samuel and Connor Thomson as they were knocked out in the second round by fifth seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

Fellow Brits Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday also lost, but Neal Skupski progressed to the third round along with Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof.

Meanwhile in the mixed doubles, Jamie Murray and American Taylor Townsend were beaten in the second round, as were Joe Salisbury and Heather Watson.
