Wimbledon 2023: Day 5 Order of Play and schedule – When are Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek playing?

The top two seeds in both the men’s and women’s draws take to the Wimbledon courts on day five.

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will grace Centre Court either side of women’s No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

On Court 1, Aryna Sabalenka continues her quest for a second Grand Slam of the season after her victory in Melbourne, while crowd favourite Ons Jabeur and home hopeful Cameron Norrie are also in action.

Casper Ruud’s shock exit to British wild card Liam Broady on Thursday was a reminder of the dangers of top players letting their attention slip even for a moment.

Top men’s match – Stan Wawrinka v Novak Djokovic

Entertainment is guaranteed when two members of the old guard go head-to-head on Centre Court.

Although Djokovic is the favourite at SW19 for good reason – he’s a seven-time winner, defending champion and has 23 Grand Slam titles to his name – Wawrinka has enjoyed a late-career surge recently.

The 38-year-old Swiss took down Emil Ruusuvuori and No. 29 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry to reach this stage and he could prove to be an awkward opponent for Novak in their first-ever grass court meeting.

Wawrinka said he didn’t want to know his head-to-head record against Djokovic when it was brought up after his win against Etcheverry, and for good reason – he’s won six and lost 20 of their previous meetings. Can he show his major-winning class on grass?

Top women’s match – Iga Swiatek v Petra Martic

Swiatek looks unstoppable. The world No. 1 is yet to drop a set in London and sacrificed just six games in four sets altogether in wins over Zhu Lin and Sara Sorribes Tormo.

However, Martic is the first seeded player the Pole has come up against and for all her major-winning experience, Swiatek’s recent history on the grass courts of Wimbledon is less impressive.

Her best-ever run was to the fourth round in 2021 – by her standards an early exit – and the experience of 32-year-old Martic, who has made it to that stage three times in her career, could be pivotal.

The Croatian world No. 29 showed her grass-court pedigree by beating Katie Boulter and Beatriz Haddad Maia on her way to the Eastbourne quarter-finals ahead of Wimbledon – can she spring a surprise here?

Brit watch

After a day to remember for British tennis on Thursday, when Broady knocked out fourth seed Ruud on an electric Centre Court and Katie Boulter marched through against Viktoriya Popova, it’s the turn of British No. 1 Cameron Norrie to wow the home crowds.

The 12th seed faces Christopher Eubanks of the United States second on No. 1 Court.

Norrie navigated a tricky opening match in four sets against qualifier Tomas Machac, and now is up against the unknown as the American is making his main-draw debut at Wimbledon this year.
