Wimbledon 2023: Novak Djokovic showed ‘real personality’ with amusing Centre Court towel antics – Barbara Schett

Novak Djokovic showed “real personality” when he tried to dry the Centre Court grass with a towel in a bizarre moment on the opening day at Wimbledon, says Barbara Schett.

The world No. 2 faced a delay during his opening-round clash with Pedro Cachin as rain forced play to be suspended and the roof to be closed.

Djokovic eventually returned to the court and started trying to dry the surface with a towel in a bid to get the action underway again, as well as encouraging the crowd to “blow” it dry.

Eurosport pundit Schett was amused by the incident, which was eventually followed up by a routine straight-sets win for the Serbian.

“Those moments are obviously great. Novak Djokovic is always up for moments like that,” said Schett.

“We’ve never seen a 23-time Grand Slam champion trying to dry the grass on Centre Court in Wimbledon with a towel!

“There was a lot of smiles on the court, obviously the rain delay was a lot longer than expected – one hour and 20 minutes – and there was a lot of chatting, with the opponent as well, going on.

“But those are some of the moments where the real personality comes through and that was a lot of fun for us to see.”

Up next for Djokovic is a match-up with world No. 70 Jordan Thompson in the second round.

The Australian made it through his opener with a five-set triumph over Brandon Nakashima.
