Wojciech Szczesny ‘doing well’ after Juventus goalkeeper leaves pitch against Sporting clutching his chest

Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was seen struggling to breathe during their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sporting Lisbon and left the pitch in tears.

The Poland international needed medical attention in the 42nd minute when he repeatedly touched his chest before speaking to his team-mate Gleison Bremer.

Bremer then requested that Juventus’ medical staff entered the pitch.

After a three-minute delay, the former Arsenal goalkeeper informed head coach Massimiliano Allegri that he could not continue playing and he was substituted for Mattia Perin. Szczesny was in tears as he left the pitch.

Sporting Lisbon tweeted “Forca, Szczesny” after the incident before Juventus confirmed on their own social media that he is “doing well”.

The tweet said: “After an initial check, Tek is doing well”

It is expected that Szczesny will undergo further medical examinations to understand the nature of the problem.

Szczesny has made 29 appearances for Juventus this season. An Arsenal academy graduate, Szczesny spent eight years with The Gunners before spending two years on loan at Roma in 2015.

The 32-year-old joined Juve permanently in 2017 and has made 206 appearances for the Serie A club.

Juventus won the first leg 1-0 thanks to a Federico Gatti strike from close range in the 73rd minute.
