Women’s Super League: Frida Maanum strike helps Arsenal keep top-three hopes alive with victory over Leicester

Arsenal bounced back from Champions League disappointment to secure a 1-0 Women’s Super League victory over Leicester on Friday night.

Frida Maanum scored on 64 minutes with the only goal of the game, curling a long-range shot home.

That goal broke the creeping tension that was only made worse when Katie McCabe had an early penalty saved, but with the added confidence of their goal, they continued to increase the pressure.

Maanum almost made it too late in the game with a free kick that struck the woodwork, but the Norwegian had to settle for just the one goal.

The win for Arsenal keeps them fourth, but they have cut Chelsea’s lead on them, who are two points clear in third and have a game in hand.

However second-placed Manchester City have played a game more than Arsenal in the WSL, and if Arsenal win that, they would draw level with the Mancunians.

Leicester are in 10th spot, two points off bottom.

Arsenal were looking to get back to winning ways after an extra-time defeat to German side Wolfsburg at the Emirates Stadium on Monday evening.

Leicester now have four wins from their last 19 matches, and while they had two wins in their last two games, they needed to keep up their form to give themselves the best chance of staying up.
