‘Wonka’ sweetens box office with $10.9 million opening night

Theatergoers were in for a sweet treat this weekend.

“Wonka” took first place at the box office Friday, taking in $10.9 million on its opening night, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo.

The musical fantasy, which tells the story of the fictional proprietor in the 1964 Roald Dahl novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” stars Timothée Chalamet in the titular role.

The Post said the actor exudes “impish charm and oddball quirks” and the film “delivers not so much a world of pure imagination as a land of constant cuteness.”

The flick reportedly cost $125 million to make, so will have to earn double its budget, $250 million, to be deemed a box office success, according to Screen Rant.

It is expected to earn $38 million on its opening weekend.

Japanese animated fantasy “The Boy and the Heron,” which was No. 1 last Friday, came in second with just over $1.4 million in sales.

The film has already exceeded $100 million at the global box office, with $56 million from Japan and $14 million from South Korea, according to Collider.

“Godzilla Minus One,” which was in second last week, climbed down a notch to third, with a $1.34 million take. It has already surpassed the $30 million milestone at the domestic box office.

“Trolls Band Together,” which premiered on Nov. 17, remained in fourth with $900,000 in sales.

Disney’s “Wish,” which was released on Nov. 22 and was one of the worst openings ever for the company, landed in fifth with earnings of $730,000.
